Sometimes it’s good to get to the show beforehand and take a stroll around Universal Citywalk. It was a good day for that. I had low expectations for the show. I previewed the set list and saw 9 songs that I really wanted to hear. That was enough to justify going and I’ve always liked Steely Dan, The Doobie Brothers/ Michael McDonald solo and Boz Scaggs. I saw Boz play a the Hollywood Bowl about 6 years ago. I kept thinking he sounded like a cross between Kermit the Frog and Chewbacca. I still laugh about it. I’ve seen Michael McDonald several times over the years, and, back in the day, his songs sounded great live. He wasn’t really cutting it the last time I saw him perform a few years ago, so I’d kind of written him off. Donald Fagen, on the other hand, still has it in concert. He was great with Steel Dan in Santa Barbara last year and the shows he did with them at the Gibson a few years ago were phenomenal. This show was on a week night and commanded a pretty hefty price tag and it didn’t sell out, but it should have. It went by in what seemed like minutes. They played quite a few great tunes and everyone sounded unbelievably good. This was a really well done concert and I’d see it again, for sure.
Here are the best tunes of the evening (the top 9):
