Weird Al Yankovic Put on a Masterful Performance at the Ventura Theater 8/25/2012

Al rules.   I’ve seen him before in Ventura a few times, in Oxnard (probably the best Al show I’ve ever been to) and a few times in LA.  I even bought a luxury box for his show at the Greek about 5 years ago.   It was very worth the money to be a VIP at a Weird Al show.  Quite the memorable experience.

Al has had the same band forever (Jon “Bermuda” Schwartz, Steve Jay,  Ruben Valtierra, and Jim “Kimo” West). Those guys are all geniuses and Al is definitely one of the greatest performers ever.

My last minute ticket ended up only costing me $25. It was some craigslist Groupon deal that I ended up lucking out with (GA was $40, so I scored).

I responded to the ad around 5:00 and was there by 7:00 for the show. I even got a front row parking spot in the structure.

I also got to cut in the long line (around the corner and then some!) with the people who had the Groupon voucher, so I went right inside the theater and even scored a good GA seat by the mixing board.

No opener. Great show. All killer, no filler.  Al has the art of the live performance down to a science.

I don’t listen to the radio (and haven’t for years), but I recognized most of the new songs he was doing parodies of (I don’t own “Alpocalypse”- I haven’t bought hardly any CDs in the last few years).

Between the awesome tunes and the costume changes, it’s a fast-paced show that was really great throughout the almost 2 hours they played.

This was definitely one of the most well produced shows I’ve ever seen at the Ventura Theater.

The lighting, visuals and video were excellent and this was a true show in every sense of the word.

He poked fun at lots of people and did a great medley with a lot of food (Rye or the Kaiser / Spam / My Bologna / Lasagna / Eat It)

He cruised through the crowd on "I Wanna Be Your Lover", which was pretty funny.

The high points were "Yoda", "White and Nerdy", "Amish Paradise", "eBay (which was nestled in a medley), "Polka Face" and "Canadian Idiot".  The entire show was great, but these tunes really stood out.
