2012 Concerts

Way over 100 shows in 2012- a personal record!

Opeth, Mastodon, Ghost Gibson Amphitheatre 4/26/2012

Heritage Hunter Tour
Universal City, CA April 26,2012

Jay Leno was at CityWalk before the show.   I’m sure he’s a huge fan of Ghost.

I’ve seen Mastodon before and thought they were pretty cool. I’ve also sort of seen Opeth in concert (I watched their show on a monitor at Gigantour in the VIP section.)
I’d heard one song from Ghost. I don’t own any recordings from any of these bands and this isn’t the type of music I usually listen to, but it seemed like an interesting tour package and is one of the few good shows at the Gibson recently that’s worth attending.

I noticed a lot of industry people there to see the concert.   By far, my biggest complaint about the concert was the lighting.   Why is it that most of the Gibson shows lately are practically in the dark?   Not only that, but they didn’t even have the big screens going on the side of the stage.   The sound was good as usual, but I couldn’t hardly see a thing all show.   Perhaps that was a good thing.

Ghost sounds like evil, creepy classic/retro rock to me. I only knew their last song- The Ritual. It sounded good. Everyone around me seemed very impressed with them. I honestly am not sure what I think of their show and seeing them again is not a big priority for me.

Mastodon was next. They had a killer backdrop and a Mr. Bungle song (“Carousel”) played right before they took the stage, so I was good to go.    The first few songs were thunderous. The drumming was absolutely intense. After a while, the music started to kind of sound the same- I blame the vocals for that.  They did throw down some good grooves, finished strong, and, overall, it was a very good set. I think they are a good band, and I’d see them again for a third time.

Headlining was Opeth. I really don’t know how I would categorize them- some of it was heavy progressive rock, some if it was sort of melodic metal and some was death metal. They were solid and I was really blown away by the guy on keyboards and his interplay with the rest of the band.   Besides some of the guttural vocals, they were doing some really neat stuff musically.   I definitely ended up enjoying the show more than I had expected.
