Way over 100 shows in 2012- a personal record!
This was a rather odd place to have a show. It’s basically inside the bar area past the restaurant in the House of Blues. The set-up for a band is rather awkward. There’s a big beam in front to the stage and if you are not sitting right in front of the band, it’s pretty difficult to see who is performing. Having said that, this was an incredible performance. For illustrative purposes, here’s Luis Villegas on one side of the post. The rest of the band is to his left. You get the idea. Anyhow, Heavy Mellow played a killer set of flamenco-style heavy metal tunes and that’s really what mattered. The played classics from Ozzy, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Pantera, Megadeth, and Metallica like you’ve never heard those songs played before. If you are a metal fan or like shredding flamenco guitar (or, better yet- both!), this is the band for you!
Here was my “vantage point” during their set. Ha ha.
I then opted for the side view approach….. Benjamin Woods and Luis Villegas are master guitar players. Their takes on metal tunes are a joy to hear. Mostly they play metal songs that everyone knows and can hum along to, so they really can engage the crowd with their music. I think their percussionist is new (I was thinking that Al Velasquez would be playing, but not so on this evening.)
Seis Cuerdas was also incredibly good. A perfect match with with Heavy Mellow in terms of how their music complimented each other. They did a few passages in unison that were completely mind blowing. I really hope these guys play together again soon.
Killer Full Moon. Great view from the Foundation Room…..
