Way over 100 shows in 2012- a personal record!
I was incredibly excited to see TSO- I’ve been a fan for way over 10 years and they have been on my list to catch a show for a long time. In the past, I didn’t really want to commit to one of their Christmas shows (they are pretty far away and right around the holidays), but I was completely on board to see them on April Fool’s Day.
I got to Universal City quite early and checked out the backstage area on the back lot. There were tons of trucks and tour bus after tour bus, so I knew it was going to be an awesome production. Getting to see the last of the equipment getting loaded onto the stage from the trucks made the show even more exciting. I also saw a bunch of long haired guys with TSO credentials mulling around City Walk before the show. I could tell they were in the band, but I honestly had no idea who they were until after they hit the stage.
The ticket said 7:30, so I got to my seat just before then and the show started just a few minutes later. No opener. Just them doing a solid 2 hour set. The orchestra pit is a great place to watch a show. There was shredding musicianship, lasers, cool lights and a great backstory for “Beethoven’s Last Night”. There were tons of excellent singers and the band was top-notch. The violinist really added a lot to the show. This was another excellent production at the Gibson and the show was everything I expected it to be.
